My dad called me today (thanks, Da!) to tell me about this segment that aired last night on MSNBC. I love that more and more mainstream media are getting involved and reporting on it. I wonder, however, how the Federal Government is going to try and reduce these rates…They REALLY need to start looking more at midwifery and legalizing it in all 50 states. CPMs–Certified Professional Midwives–are currently only legal, licensed and regulated in 27 states. They are illegal in nine states, and are in legal grey areas in the remaining states. Many hospital and birth center CNMs (Certified Nurse Midwives) are at the mercy of OBs. Statistics prove that better outcomes take place under the care of midwives. The government needs to look at that, as well as the money-driven Cesarean rates in hospitals in our country. Too often I see scare tactics and bait and switch on mothers at the very end of pregnancies, backing many women into a fear-based corner. It’s irresponsible and unethical, in my opinion. They need to take responsibility for the problems they are causing by their practices.
